Our Five Year Old!
Yes, we've been spending time together creating memories and not so much time blogging about them! Here is another one that I've needed to get caught up on. Our baby turned Five!!! Through all of this, we remember and know that God will continue to keep us safe and guide us in the direction we need to go in our lives. We know how much God loves us all and are so thankful for that!!

Our Jonas turned 5 on September 16th! I can't believe we have a 5 year old already. It seems like he was just born. I guess time really does fly by when you're having fun (and when you're not looking)!
This year we decided not to have a big birthday party. We wanted it to be something a little more personal, low key and special for our family. Jonas had been asking to go to Chuck E Cheese's for a long time and we decided to take him and... he LOVED it! I remember going there when I was a child and loved playing skeet ball or miniature bowling. Jonas loved it too... that boy has an arm! He loved riding the motorized games - jetski, snowmobile and the fighter pilot - where he could actually sit on the rides and steer while he rode them. We're starting to think he may be a pilot someday. He played, ate pizza, enjoyed his first full glass of pop (soda for those of you that are not from the north :) and had lots of laughs. It was a perfect birthday... followed up by a great football ice cream cake (that he requested) at home!

As we enter this new year with Jonas, we see how happy and energetic he is and how he just loves to laugh! He makes up jokes and laughs out loud until his belly hurts (even when the jokes aren't that funny!) He especially enjoys calling up his Grandpa and tells him jokes that make no sense, but it's just fun to laugh, isn't it?! Jonas has a huge caring heart... he just makes my heart melt everytime a sweet word comes out of his little mouth. He's very helpful around the house and loves to be around younger kids. He wishes he had a younger sibling and he likes to take care of his many stuffed animals. He affectionately calls one of them his "sis". We're so happy that he has such love and joy in his heart! Jonas loves to play hide and seek as well as run as fast as he can around our yard. He loves to race, play baseball, make hoops with the basketball and enjoys bopping the ball in the backyard. He is also definately a crazy climber! We have known this for a long time and are trying to find new ways to help him explore climbing in a safe way. Unfortunately our yard is filled with pine trees, which are pretty difficult to climb! For now he climbs the swingsets and hangs from them. I remember doing that when I was younger too. (I'm starting to feel old!)
Another thing Jonas has recently he's enjoyed is playing hide and seek tag. He loves having his quiet time watching a favorite show on tv, a movie, playing his Leapster Explorer or looking at books in his room. Those times are rare as he mostly likes to be around me in the kitchen or running around outside. Maybe he'll be a chef or a track star someday!
Jonas loves learning to read and sounding out words. He's also practicing writing at home. Today he wrote us a reminder note: "Trash" - he sounded it out, wrote it down and told me that we needed to remember to take out the trash cause the garbage man comes in the morning. :) Good thing we have him around to remind us!
I will post more pictures as I sort through them. Hope you're enjoying this wonderful time of year! Christmas is my favorite time of year! We are getting ready in anticipation for Christmas and so thankful for everyone in our life.

Catching up on Posts - Updates on PreK 4

It's hard to believe the summer has come and gone already! It's time for a new chapter in our lives.... SCHOOL! Jonas started the 4 year old preK class last Monday and he just LOVED it! Thanking God for the blessings of this school and Jonas' wonderful teacher this year. We're looking forward to all he learns and how he grows in God and in life this year.

Jonas' school is the First Presbyterian Preschool in Aiken. He attended for about a month and a half. He did very well in his class of 12 four and five year olds. He made some good friends and was enjoying school. Then he took almost two months off from school so he could spend time at home.
A little background on why we did this...
Earlier this past summer, we noticed Jonas was acting differently. He wasn't hearing what was going on at certains times throughout the day. I thought it was"just a phase" or he was ignoring us. Then we started to notice that we couldn't get his attention even when we touched his arm and said his name. His "phasing out" was about 20-30 seconds at a time. We did a little research online and then mentioned it to his pediatrician. She said it wasn't normal and we should get it checked out by a neurologist. He had some testing done (EEGs) at the Children's hospital in Georgia this past August and found out he was having petite mal seizures (absence seizures) and needed to start taking medication. Since we found out he could have these seizures while walking and could potentially fall, we decided we needed to keep a closer watch over him. We were more comfortable having him at home until we all adjusted to the changes. He had some ups and downs but overall, he didn't really notice a difference. His main issue was his trouble sleeping at night and being tired. We talked to the doctor about it and tried a few new things to help him sleep better at night.
Jonas missed his friends at school, but liked staying home and seeing his other friends at the park and playdates. In the meantime, we were living life normally and started doing school at home! He loves doing school work at home and requests it even when it's not scheduled. He's writing his name pretty well and has started sounding out words to read. He loves books and loves to learn. It's a big encouragement for all of us!

Jonas is doing exceptionally well! He is as happy and as energetic as ever! Now that he has a normal routine again, we discussed getting him back into school. After much thought and prayer, we decided it was the best thing to do. He really missed being around his friends at school. Jonas started back to school a week ago and loves everything about it! He loves being able to play with his school friends again and is enjoying all the fun he's having in Mrs. Gregory's class.
